- Chapter Twelve -

Professor Anna's Torment

Jayden could not believe what he was seeing. Almost three years he had lived at the Sanctum, yet he didn’t have a clue this existed. It wasn’t like he and his friends weren’t nosey enough. What was the need for all of this? Was the Sanctum not already excessively secretive? His eyes skimmed the room, pausing on each new and interesting object. Before him was a large organised display of gadgets and inventions; some of them odd looking and some of them were easy to see what their functions were. The ceiling lay high above them like some kind of warehouse, housing tall inventions with ease. The outside of the room had been quite deceptive on how large this room would be.

“Are these all the senior students inventions?” he asked quietly. They were not sure if anyone else would be down here. He searched for Robert, finding him running his hand over the metal of one of the inventions, his eyes wide.

“I’m not sure,” Robert spoke in an awed whisper.

“I saw some weird gadgets the night I arrived in the garage where Charlie parks the Limousine. “We were not able to stop and look that night. It was already past midnight, and they wanted us shown to our rooms so we could get some sleep. Some of them were quite weird. I haven’t seen any of them since and I wondered what had happened to them.” He tilted his head to look up at a clear glass carriage at the top of one of the tall inventions that looked like it had legs. A seat with operating sticks could just be seen through the glass from the ground.

“I wonder what these are used for, if at all?” Eva placed her hand on a scanning recognition device, watching the light travel down her palm, only to have a red light flash on the screen in the shape of a cross. “Clearly I am not allowed to operate this one, and I don’t know how to hack past palm scans.”

Scarlet headed to the left down the large gap in the middle of the room that looked like a wide road but made of cement. In the distance, Jayden spotted the garage door and jogged to catch up with her.

“Where are you going?” he asked.

“I’m checking to see if this is the door that I think that it is.” When they reached the door, she searched the edges for a button or lever to open it. Hanging by the side was a swinging rope attached to the side of a plastic box, on the end was a hanging knob. She grabbed the end and pressed the flat side of the knob. Immediately a light came on in the plastic box, and the door began to roll up, revealing the tumbling water beyond the open cave room, caked in marble tiles. The noise of the rising door was lost in the roar of the waterfall.

“That’s why you couldn’t hear anything through the door when you had your ear pressed up to it the other day,” Jayden said.
